Halloween is just around the corner
Halloween is just around the corner, which means it's time for spooky parties and costumes. But dressing up can be expensive.
According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, the average person will spend almost $78 this year for Halloween -- up $2.50 from last year.
Here's another frightening thought: consumers spend nearly $3 billion on Halloween costumes alone.
Vera Gibbons, a contributing editor for the money management website Mint.com, said there are plenty of ways to avoid a horrifying bill.
"Some of these costumes are $40, $50, $60. So you want to shop specialty costume sites like Halloween Express or BuyCostumes.com. Right now, BuyCostumes.com is offering a $25 discount for first-time customers if you spend $125 or more," she said.
She also suggests that for popular costumes, such as characters from Disney's hit film "Frozen," that you shop early because those costumes will sell out quickly. Even if your child doesn't want to be a popular character, kids' costume prices can be downright scary.
"(Kids) may want the latest and greatest, but why not shop your closet, shop your kid's closet? Hold a swap with other people in the neighborhood, see what they can sort of lend to complete the overall costume and then maybe pick up a couple of inexpensive accessories," Gibbons said.
Another tip she offers is that traditional costumes, such as a pirate or cat, can be purchased online through eBay or Craigslist because manufacturers rarely change the costumes.
But if you want really monstrous savings for next year, Gibbons suggests waiting until the day after Halloween when costumes can be discounted as much as 80 percent.
So whether you decide to be Captain America, Medusa or a scary clown, there are ways to save some cash.

Disney is teaming up with Alfred Angelo to offer nine gowns inspired by popular Disney film characters.
This year’s line debuts Wednesday night at the New York Bridal Week, and the dresses will be available for purchase in January at Alfred Angelo stores in the U.S. and specialty retailers around the world.

The line of Disney Fairy Tale Wedding dresses changes every year. This year’s theme focuses on wedding color options beyond white and ivory, and each of the nine dresses offered – including a gown inspired by Snow White and by Tiana from the film “The Princess and the Frog” – will be come in signature colors, as well as in the traditional white or ivory, according to the statement.
The beaded Elsa-inspired dress comes in ice blue as well as ivory. The Tiana-inspired gown has embroidery and crystal beading and is reminiscent of the character’s signature flower, the lily. The dress will be available in the signature color Lily Pond as well as in ivory.
The Snow White-inspired gown features a crystal-beaded waistline, handmade roses and a cathedral train. It will be available in Sweet Scarlet as well as in ivory and white.
The other dresses in the collection will be inspired by Ariel, from the film “The Little Mermaid”; Aurora, from the film “Sleeping Beauty”; Belle, from the film “Beauty and the Beast”; Jasmine, from the film “Aladdin;” Cinderella and Rapunzel.

“Dreezy’s exactly the kind of talent we look to include in the BET Cyphers; lyrical, witty and superior ability,” says Jesse Collins, executive producer of the BET Hip Hop Awards. “When she did the cypher, she delivered. She’s Chicago’s own now, but she’s about to be a star. ”
Quite a few are abuzz about that cypher and wondering aloud just who Dreezy is. Though she’s been releasing music since 2012, she caught on in a big way after releasing her remix of Nicki Minaj and Lil Herb’s spring hit “Chiraq,” and many even said that her verses were meatier than Minaj’s. Even better: Dreezy is from Chicago and has roots in Chatham. Plus, the video for “Chiraq,” shot by Chicagoan Nick Brazinski, was produced in iconic places including the Harold’s Chicken on 87th Street. So, why does a straight-A, student-council leader, Rich South high school grad go on to Northern Illinois University, stay one month, and decide that she’d rather make music?
“I got to the point of my life where I felt like I was doing this because that’s what my parents wanted me to do, but I really didn’t know what I wanted to do with myself,” says Dreezy, 20, born Seandrea Sledge, who has roots near 82nd and King Drive. “I was thinking: ‘Do I wanna be the person that gets out of high school and is one of my dad’s first successful kids to finish college and all that?’ It was a good thought but I didn’t know if that would make me happy.”
But she’s happy now — even though she’s juggling the travel and the photo shoots and the rigors of evaluating business deals. She misses home sometimes and when here, she still records her music in a tiny, soundproof-room-turned-studio in the Chatham neighborhood with her trusted producer DBrooks.

As far as makeup and clothing, she’s not going all Hollywood on Chicago. At least not yet, anyway. She does her own makeup and occasionally consults with fashion stylists, but prefers to dress herself.
“I don’t like them really dressing me ’cause I know how I like to look,” she says. “I get certain stylists to take me to some stores to get certain looks, but I dress myself. I like doing my own style.”
And, as of this moment, she’s unsigned. Or at least, her manager — who also managed Kanye West — isn’t dishing any details.
No matter. As she raps on “Chiraq,” she’s “verified” — a shout out to getting that coveted blue check mark that is social media’s version of a Roman-Catholic confirmation. She is making videos for her mixtape “Schizo,” and is soon to release a “deluxe” version of “Schizo.”
Not bad for someone who six years ago turned a music hobby into something that looks like a career.
“At first I was just playing around,” she says, remembering her early rhymes. “I definitely feel like I’m starting to find myself. I’m starting to find my flow.”
